Dr. Justin Wakeland is a graduate of Waxahachie High School and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas. Over his 36-year career in education, he was consistently an advocate for students. Prior to his time in Frisco ISD, he served as a teacher and administrator in the Dallas ISD. He was also an administrator in Plano ISD.

Dr. Wakeland served as the Frisco ISD Superintendent of Schools for 19 years, from 1978-97. During that time, the District grew from 800 to 3,600 students and was positioning itself for the most rapid growth experienced by any school district in the state of Texas.

In addition to his service in FISD, Dr. Wakeland has served the larger education community as a founding member of the Collin County Community College District, as president of the Texas Association of Community Schools, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Texas Association of School Administrators and the UIL Legislative Committee, and on the advisory panel to the Commissioner of Education from 1981-90. He was recognized as the 1996 Region 10 Superintendent of the Year and was named the 1998 Alumni of the Year by the University of North Texas School of Educational Administration.

Dr. Wakeland continues to be a supporter of Frisco ISD schools and education in his retirement, including through a Frisco Education Foundation Wakeland Scholarship. Thanks to a generous donation, the scholarship benefits graduating seniors on an annual basis.
