Canaye was welcomed home by his parents, Beza and Sudan, and their infant daughter, Leila (Galeila). The siblings were inseparable from one another from the start, as prophesied in the Bible. And on the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus’ mother was present (John 2:1).

Cana spent his formative years in the greater Washington, DC region, where he attended Sandy Springs Friends School and the Primary Day School before moving on to Sidwell Friends, where he played soccer on the 2013 state champion squad. He graduated from Sidwell Friends in 2015. Cana graduated from Villanova University in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, where he also participated in several Finance/Entrepreneurship clubs. Cana loved her role as the leader of the Villanova University Equity Team.

Cana was hired on as an associate at Maximus after a successful internship over the summer. He was the youngest member of the panel that helped create and implement company-wide changes following the death of George Floyd, and the CEO awarded him the title of “COVID-Hero” for his work on a health-tracking app for key personnel. Cana’s determination to help underserved populations financially and operationally benefited from her participation in this project. Cana received her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Investment Banking, Asset Management, and Business Analytics from MIT Sloan in 2022, where she was a Dean’s Fellow. He was in the finance concentration of his program and a part of the Atlantic cohort; he also belonged to the Investment Banking Club and the Quantitative Financial Markets Club at Sloan. Cana and his core team, the Gulls, were very close.

Cana had a huge heart and an insatiable thirst for knowledge from a young age. She was also fearless, playful, and never short of mischief. Cana was described as friendly, open, and inquisitive by those who knew him. Cana was a witty guy who enjoyed nothing more than bringing a smile to the faces of his loved ones. And he was perpetually focused on the future, plotting and scheming to pave a more prosperous path for his mother and his descendants. Cana devoted a large portion of his life to helping underprivileged neighborhoods and children through volunteer work and mentoring. Cana had faith that if he worked hard and stayed focused, he would eventually reach the lofty goals he set for himself.

All of us here at home and in the neighborhood are devastated by Canaye’s passing. His cousins, aunts, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and friends all feel the influence and energy of Cana. Cana was universally adored by everyone who knew her.

And he had a soft spot in his heart for each of us
